Pros and Cons of Hiring a Personal Trainer

By Zara Lewis

If you’re like me, you constantly try to improve yourself and lead a healthy lifestyle. I strongly believe that I owe this to myself and my two beautiful kids.

Still, even though I consider fitness to be my passion, I too can get envious of people who can motivate themselves and stick to their own schedule flawlessly.

For me, the biggest game-changer was the decision to hire a professional fitness trainer. Of course, I’m well aware that this is not for everyone.

Therefore, I want to share my experience with you.  Take a look at the following pros and cons and decide whether this is worth your while and money for yourself.

Pros and Cons of Hiring a Personal Trainer

Pro – specific workout plan

A professional fitness instructor will create a workout sheet that’s tailored to your own specific needs. They will take various factors into consideration, such as your fitness ability, flexibility, health, weight and the result you want to achieve.

For example, it turned out that I used to do all the wrong exercises for arm toning. With a special set of workouts that suit your needs the best, you’ll also be able to see positive change faster.

What’s more, these specially selected exercises won’t push you over the limit. That way, you won’t be too tired or in too much pain the next day to continue working out.

Con – not everyone is a professional

Not every fitness trainer is really a professional just because they add this adjective to their job title. You have to be very selective when it comes to the gym you want to go to and their level of professionalism.

Some trainers may appear professional but will neglect to create workout sheet that’s specifically designed for you. Some will ignore your current fitness level and push you harder than you did yourself when trying to exercise to YouTube videos.

In that respect, looking for the best professional trainer may get a bit stressful, but you should definitely put some effort into checking references and recommendations from other people.

Pros and Cons of Hiring a Personal Trainer

Pro – the right way to exercise

Having a professional trainer means that you will always have someone to check up on you and oversee the way you work out.

In my case, my fitness instructor pointed out that I position my feet wrong when I squat, which only put pressure on my joints instead of actually toning my thighs and bum.

It’s essential to stress how important the right way to do a certain exercise actually is. It’s not only about getting all the fitness benefits from a proper workout but the fact that you can actually hurt yourself if you constantly exercise incorrectly.

Con – aggressive trainer

This hasn’t happened to me per se, but my friend was really troubled by the way her personal trainer went about their training sessions. Every time she didn’t do the exercise right, he was pretty blunt about his anger and disappointment as if she was expected to nail every single exercise right the moment she tried it.

Some people may say that having someone to nag you and even insult you when necessary will only keep you going, but this doesn’t work for everyone. She was only discouraged by his behavior.

Because of this, you really need to pay attention to your trainer’s personality, which can add to the stress when looking for the right one.

Pros and Cons of Hiring a Personal Trainer

Pro – motivation works wonders

I really couldn’t believe how helpful and motivational it is to have someone by your side to tell you that you can do something, that you’re improving every day, that they can notice a huge difference in your appearance, etc.

Positive reinforcement and encouragement from my personal trainer turned out to be the missing link I needed in order to find the willpower to exercise and do something about the way I look.

In my experience, finding a good personal trainer in Adelaide can be a challenge because there are so many of them. I’m glad I focused my search on those with positive reviews, stating they are really kind, uplifting and motivational.

Con – expensive investment

Hiring a professional trainer is not something that you can get away with cheaply. If you want the best possible service, you need to pay for it. Because of that, I understand that not everyone will be up for this. Still, I have to mention that this is an investment you make in yourself.

On the other hand, if you’re actually able to motivate yourself and workout at home or at the gym regularly on your own, you really don’t have to spend money on a personal fitness instructor.

Why I Hired a Personal Trainer

In all honesty, I don’t think that I would reach my goal and feel happy, healthy and confident the way I do now without my trainer’s help. So, if you sense that you’re in a vicious circle of constantly feeling depressed and sluggish but powerless to change all that on your own, definitely consider hiring a professional trainer.

  1. Haha, these are true. My husband and I hired a trainer to prep for our wedding and had to try a couple different people out. One trainer we worked with was telling us a sex story between herself and her boyfriend. And it was super expensive! Sure, having a planned workout is nice, but you can find pre planned workouts everywhere! I’ll even be posted some on my blog… YouTube is available for checking form!

    1. A sex story?? lol 🙂 Yes, I agree. You can find great workouts everywhere. However, I’ve always wondered if I’m doing right by not hiring a personal trainer. Hence this guest post. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  2. I don’t hire personal trainers anymore because my schedule is such that I can barely schedule anything because everything changes within a moments notice! Also, not to sound cocky or anything but male trainers tend to always just start flirting with me and it’s really frustrating because I just want to work out. Luckily I am smart enough in the fitness world and there is enough technology with fitness information that I can create my own work outs! 🙂

    1. I’m also not keen on hiring a personal trainer, and I think I would feel uncomfortable working with a male trainer, anyway! However, I’ve met a couple of people who swear by their personal trainers, hence this guest post. Thanks for commenting!

  3. I hired a personal trainer to help me train through pregnancy because I had some complications. She was wonderful but I prefer to train by myself and am motivated enough to go regularly to gym. I’ll be cleared to go back to gym in a few weeks but ai am nervous because I don’t know how to ‘break up with her’ without hurting her feelings. It’s not her, it’s me!
