Simple and Effective Advice on Eating a Healthy Diet
by Pedro Rodriguez
Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t difficult, but you’ll need consistency and willpower to get good results.
In this post, I’ll give you some practical advice on how to eat a healthy diet in order to look and feel your best.
1. Drink water, not liquid calories
Sweet carbonated drinks contain sugar, which makes them appealing to our sense of taste. It’s true that soft drink companies know all the tricks to make us love their products, but they provide nothing but empty calories.
In order to eat a healthy diet, you must substitute soft drinks with water or infused water. Be careful with fruit juice, though. Remember that processed fruit juice contains a lot of added sugar, which is nothing but more empty calories.
2. Trade snacks for delicious, fresh fruit
We all love to dig into a bag of chips when we’re feeling hungry, but this is clearly not the healthiest snack for weight loss. Again, we’re dealing with completely empty and useless calories here. Chips may be tasty, but they’re not worth their salt when it comes to nutrition.
It’s a good idea to substitute junk food snacks with our favorite, in-season fruit. A piece of fruit contains a fair amount of vitamins and fiber, which will make you feel full and keep you from eating unhealthy junk.
3. Make a healthy shopping list
We usually tend to eat whatever we have at hand, so a shopping list is a smart strategy when you want to eat as healthy as possible.
Fruit, vegetables, legumes, lean meats, and fish should all be a regular part of your diet. And you should avoid shopping for cookies, white bread, soft drinks, and generally anything that’s highly processed.
So try to stick to a healthy shopping list instead of mindlessly throwing snacks into your cart.
4. Take the time to chew your food
The moment you put food in your mouth and start chewing is the most important part of the digestive process. The longer you chew, the less you will eat.
It’s estimated that it takes 15 minutes for your body to receive the fullness signal, and you won’t be hungry after that. That’s why taking the time to eat and savor your food prevents you from overeating and makes you healthier.
5. Make it a habit to sit down to eat
Although sitting down to eat may seem like the most obvious thing to do, I’m sure you don’t always do it.
Nowadays, it seems like work, career, chores, and parenting conspire to keep people on their feet all day. Let’s face it, you probably don’t always have the time to sit down and eat a proper meal, let alone enjoy it.
But remember that taking the time to eat makes you healthier. It improves digestion, keeps you from overeating, and will even make your meals a lot more enjoyable. Besides, who doesn’t like to share a meal with good company? Do it for your health.
6. Make fruit and vegetables your best friends
A delicious salad is the healthiest way to fuel your body with countless nutrients and make you feel full.
It’s amazing how wise mother nature is. All those different colors in your favorite fruits and veggies indicate all the different nutrients they contain. That’s why you should eat the rainbow, and not fill your salad just with greens.
If you’re not into salads, then grab those fruits and veggies and make smoothies or soups. Just make sure to include vegetables as well as fruit. That way, you’ll get enough fiber and feel full for longer.
7. Be active and not sedentary
This is almost as important as a healthy diet. You just can’t be healthy if you live in a comfortable and sedentary life.
I know it’s not easy to start doing some kind of physical activity, but you’ll enjoy it more when you start seeing results.
Your body actually craves movement, so you’ll start to feel the benefits sooner than you think. Once you make physical activity a habit, your mood will improve and you’ll look and feel much better.
The best things in life always require some kind of effort and commitment, but being healthy isn’t as hard as it seems. All you need to do is make a few substitutions, pick up a few simple healthy habits, and you’ll be on your way to becoming a better version of yourself!
